SOUTHERN AFRICAN LEGAL INFORMATION INSTITUTE NPC (SAFLII)
SAFLII (Southern African Legal Information
Institute NPC), established almost 25
years ago, is an online repository of public
legal information from mainly South Africa.
SAFLII has systematically and painstakingly
grown its substantial collection of legal
documents, which includes judgments,
legislation, Rules of Court, journal
articles, reports of commissions of inquiry,
Government Gazettes, Constitutional Assembly
resources, Rule 16A notices and daily court
rolls.
Key to SAFLII’s operations is the integrity
of the material which are published. It has
established working relationships with all
the High Court divisions, the Supreme Court
of Appeal, the Constitutional Court, the
Land Court, the Labour Court and other
specialised tribunals, and judgments are
only posted on the SAFLII portal if received
directly from one of these courts. SAFLII
has no authority or standing to edit the
text of judgments; and reportable and
non-reportable judgments are uploaded to its
website. Judgments are uploaded on a daily
basis, making available the most recent
jurisprudence in one place.
All the information is accessible for free
and users need not be subscribers to access
the information. Maximising access to the
legal information on SAFLII’s portal is a
practical way of increasing access to
justice and supporting the rule of law. |
