ASSET SATURDAY SCHOOLS
ASSET
is a Western Cape based, Section 21, non-profit
organisation which was launched in 2003. It
previously operated under the auspices of the South
African Institute of Race Relations (Western Cape
Region). ASSET has been serving the educational
needs of students from disadvantaged communities
since 1982.
ASSET through its Saturday Programme, called the
Learner Development Programme (LDP), offers
supplementary tuition in key subjects to grades 11
and 12 learners from selected township schools, with
very close liaison with school principals and
subject teachers, throughout the year and during
school holidays when Winter and Spring Schools take
place. The LDP objectives include: improving
conceptual understanding and learner performance;
improving language proficiency across the curriculum
and helping learners explore appropriate career
choices.
The Claude Leon Foundation supports ASSET in
offering the Saturday Programme to 1 800 grade 11
and 12 learners from the informal settlements of
Kraaifontein (Masibambane, Bloekombos, Wallacedene
and Fisantekraal High Schools); Sinenjongo High
School in Joe Slovo Park (Milnerton) as well as
Masiphumelele and Ocean View High Schools outside
Fish Hoek, on the outskirts of Cape Town. |
