RIGHT2KNOW
While the
Right2Know Campaign launched in August
2010 as an coalition of organisations and people
responding to the Protection of State Information
Bill (the Secrecy Bill), the Campaign quickly
broadened its scope to tackle related issues. The
Secrecy Bill is a symptom and symbol of much broader
obstacles to the free flow of information: free
expression and access to information are the
building blocks of an accountable democracy that is
able to deliver on the basic needs of its people.
In keeping with this commitment, the Right2Know
Campaign now mobilises on four legs:
• |
Stop the Secrecy Bill: Ongoing
mobilisation and advocacy against draconian
clauses in the Secrecy Bill.
|
• |
InfoAccessNow!: Supporting
communities and groups in our coalition to
access existing information that is critical
to their broader struggles for social
justice.
|
• |
Media freedom for All: Promoting a
free and diverse media sector by monitoring
and responding to legislative developments,
educating and organising activist
organisations on the ground on these issues,
and advocating for more support for
community media organisations.
|
• |
Justice for Whistleblowers: Linking
whistleblowers to appropriate partner
organisations for legal support and
advocacy.
|
The
Right2Know Campaign is a coalition of
many rather than a single organisation. We
current operate through four provincial
working groups — in the Eastern Cape,
Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape
— as well as an elected national committee
made up of representatives from key civil
society organisations, community groups and
social movements from across our provincial
support bases. |
