PEOPLE'S LEGAL CENTRE

People's Legal Centre (PLC) is a South African organisation focused on legal empowerment and working to increase access to justice for individuals and communities facing structural barriers in the legal system.

Despite South Africa’s strong constitutional protections, many individuals remain unable to exercise their rights in practice due to complexity, cost, and limited access to legal knowledge and support. PLC addresses this gap through an integrated approach that combines legal education, community-based advice, peer support networks, and strategic legal intervention.

At the core of PLC’s approach is the belief that sustainable access to justice requires not only legal services, but also the strengthening of community capability to understand, navigate, and use the law effectively, not only within courts, but across administrative and governmental systems through which rights are exercised in everyday life.

PLC operates through five interconnected programme components:

• Community Paralegal Course
• Community Workshops
• Alumni Network
• Community Advice Centre
• Law Clinic

Together, these programmes form a legal empowerment pathway that moves individuals from rights awareness, to practical support, to locally embedded problem-solving capacity, and ultimately toward systemic legal change.
